Reiki is an ancient energy healing art. Its name is derived from the Japanese words “REI”, meaning “universal or divine” and “KI”, meaning “energy”. Universal energy is believed to pass through a practitioner’s hands to several energy points, or chakras, on a client’s body helping to increase energy flow through the body. With clear energy flow, the body is able to heal itself, mind, body and spirit.

Relaxation is the clearest benefit of a Reiki session. Clients often report an overall sense of well-being lasting from several hours to several days. Recently, the National Institute of Health funded research into Reiki’s effect on several physical diseases ranging from fibromyalgia to prostate cancer.

A Reiki session typically lasts an hour. The client lies fully clothed on a massage table while the practitioner places his/her hands over several designated points on the body which correspond to the chakras, or energy centers. The hands remain stationary at each point for 3 to 5 minutes. A client may feel tingling, heat or sometimes nothing, depending on the energy flow at each point. The intent is to relieve blocks or constrictions of energy, thereby improving emotional, physical and spiritual health. Reiki is not a religion nor is any particular belief system necessary for Reiki to work. One only has to be open to its possibilities.
